About us

We’re Thomas and Sureen Gouws — a husband-and-wife team, architects by training and artists by heart. While our creative journeys are individual, they’ve always run parallel. Each of us brings a distinct artistic voice to Gouws Art Gallery, yet our works share a common language: minimalism, materiality, and the interplay of space and emotion.

Our transition from architecture to art was a personal evolution — a desire to reconnect with hands-on creation and explore ideas beyond structure. While we each create our own artworks, our styles complement one another, shaped by years of architectural practice and a shared love for form, texture, and calm presence.

Gouws Art Gallery is where our individual practices meet — a shared studio and platform where we present our artworks under one name. From sculptural wall pieces to site-specific art installations, our works are handcrafted to enrich contemporary interiors with intention and impact.

Originally from South Africa, we now live and work in Australia with our two young daughters, finding daily inspiration in the balance of creativity, nature, and simplicity. Our family life and art practice are deeply intertwined — grounded in curiosity, care, and a quiet dedication to beauty.

My journey into art began with a desire to slow down — to reconnect with a creative process that felt intuitive, grounding, and meaningful. With a background in interior architecture and years spent designing spaces for others, I found myself craving a quieter form of expression. One that moved at a different pace, and allowed space for presence, softness, and soul.

I’m drawn to natural textures, circular forms, and the rhythms found in nature and energy. My work often explores themes of stillness, unity, and reflection — using wood, pigment, and hand-applied texture to create pieces that feel calm, tactile, and emotionally resonant. Inspiration comes from fractals, the moon, movement, and breath — all layered through a lens of organic minimalism.

My creative process is slow and sensory. I consider each mark, each texture, and how light will move across the surface. The goal is not perfection, but balance — a felt sense of harmony. Art, for me, is about coming home to yourself. It’s about offering people a place to pause.

I work from our Brisbane studio, where life and creativity are beautifully intertwined with my husband, Thomas, and our two young daughters. While Thomas and I have distinct artistic styles, we are united in our belief that art can transform how we feel in a space — and in ourselves.

    - Artist Bio -

Sureen Gouws is a South African-born artist and former interior architect based in Brisbane, Australia. With a Master’s degree in Interior Architecture, she spent over a decade designing considered, elegant residential interiors before transitioning into a full-time artistic practice.

Her work is inspired by natural cycles, sacred geometry, and the emotional tone of stillness. Using organic forms, muted palettes, and richly textured surfaces, she creates sculptural wall pieces that invite calm and reflection. Each piece is handcrafted with intention and shaped by light, rhythm, and intuitive balance.

Sureen’s creative practice is influenced by her personal experiences with mental health and neurodivergence. She uses art as a tool for grounding and connection, and her work is often found in wellness spaces, private collections, and serene contemporary interiors.

Her work is available through Gouws Art Gallery, her personal website, and select design and art galleries in Australia and abroad.

I come from a world of precision — a world of drawings, plans, and spatial intent. Architecture has shaped the way I think, how I approach form, and how I find beauty in restraint. But over time, I felt the pull toward something more personal — a slower, more instinctive form of making. Art became a space for that.

My creative process is rooted in reduction. I’m drawn to the quiet tension between control and imperfection, between form and feeling. Using hand-drawn lines, tonal gradients, and textured surfaces, I explore balance, rhythm, and subtle shifts in depth. Colour, for me, is emotional — I enjoy working with limited palettes and exploring their tonal possibilities to create softness, weight, or presence.

My work often draws on architectural language — repetition, structure, and proportion — but is guided less by resolution and more by intuition. It’s not about finality, but about allowing space for reflection. Each piece is an invitation to pause.

While I continue to practise architecture, my art gives me a different kind of freedom. It’s where I work with my hands, embrace process, and reconnect with the why behind design. Through Gouws Art Gallery, I share this practice alongside my wife, Sureen. While our work differs in style, we are both grounded in the same values: simplicity, clarity, and the pursuit of work that brings calm into the spaces we live and work in.

    - Artist Bio -

Thomas Gouws is a South African-born architect and abstract artist based in Brisbane, Australia. After graduating from the University of Pretoria in 1996, he established his architectural studio in 2002 and has since been recognised for his refined, modern residential projects.

Art has long been a parallel passion in Thomas’s life. While continuing his architectural practice, he has developed a body of abstract work that explores the intersection of structure, emotion, and materiality. His artworks are grounded in a reductive, process-led approach — using tonal variation, layered textures, and linear repetition to evoke a calm and quiet presence.

Thomas’s creative work reflects his ongoing search for balance — between discipline and spontaneity, clarity and complexity. His pieces are guided by instinct and shaped by his architectural eye, offering a softer, more intuitive expression of form.

His work is available through Gouws Art Gallery, his personal website, and select galleries, including those he collaborates nationally and internationally.
